And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Eastern train last night was reported 7½ hours late on account of a washout between Colorado Springs and Pueblo.”

75 years ago: “While Durango experienced an encouraging series of light showers reports from the north and west indicate hard rains in those localities where Forest Service men were replanting trees in the Lime Creek area, the rain temporarily stopped work.”

50 years ago: “Senior Sneak Day was a huge success especially if it can be judged by the number of sunburns and aching muscles at Durango High School this morning. The annual sneak day was held at Navajo Dam in New Mexico and the 200 members of the graduating class water skied, ate, played baseball, ate, swam, ate and became sunburned. The bunch went down in a caravan.”

25 years ago: “About 75 percent of Purgatory Ski Resort’s 120 employees were laid off while the ski area seeks operating funds. ... The Purgatory Village hotel remains open, telephones are being answered, Purgatory-Durango Central Reservations continues to operate and marketing, personnel and accounting work will continue. Otherwise, work at the ski area is being ‘deferred’ until financial arrangements are made.”
