Welcome to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Fort Lewis College opened RMAC softball play with a pair of losses to Regis on Saturday in Denver. Regis shut out FLC 5-0 in Game 1, then won the nightcap 11-6 to drop the Skyhawks to 4-8 on the season.
“It was a tough day (Saturday),” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said in a news release. “One rough inning in each game, and when we take care of that, it will be a different story.”
Scoreless through four innings in Game 1, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, then scored four in the sixth for the big inning and a victory.
Victoria Johnson allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits through five innings in the loss, while Katie Watkins relieved Johnson in the sixth and allowed a final unearned run.
Regis (2-9, 2-0 RMAC) scored five runs on just five hits.
FLC, which got two hits from Kamali’i Peneku and one from Destinee DeHerrera for three total, committed four errors.
FLC led Regis 1-0 after three innings in Game 2, then the Rangers scored six runs in the fourth. FLC answered with four runs to pull within 6-5, then the Rangers responded with a five-run sixth inning. FLC pushed a run across in the seventh for the final margin of victory.
Kiley Raica took the loss in the Skyhawks’ circle after allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Three pitchers followed Raica into the circle.
Offensively, Chelsea Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, Peneku added two more hits, and five other Skyhawks collected hits for 10 total in the defeat.
“We fought hard, but as a team, we want to get different results,” Zeiter said. “(Sunday) is a new day, and we plan to come out and play solid, consistent softball.”
