I strongly oppose the proposed land use changes. I, like many county residents, want to enjoy a more rural lifestyle, while still having the amenities of Durango for entertainment, education and recreation.
Obviously, most of the more than 1,000 citizens at the meeting on Jan. 16th share my view. I understand that the county authorized a Texas firm, at a cost of nearly $300,000, to do a study that led to the proposals now being considered.
With all due respect, I believe commissioners Gwen Lachelt and Julie Westendorff consider this change as their legacy legislation. It reminds me of the situation prior to the adoption of Obamacare, when Nancy Pelosi said, “We have to pass this before we read it.”
That is exactly what is now happening, as no one has completely described all of the negative effects on the taxpaying citizens in our county.
I have been advised that in a private meeting, Lachelt stated and Westendorff agreed that, “we are going to approve this change at our first opportunity.” That is so wrong, but apparently they believe they have the power to do just that.
If so, shame on them!
