Durango High School’s boys lacrosse team senior captain Cullen Robinette had a final season to remember, as he etched his way into the DHS record books and finished amongst the top scorers in state this past spring. He helped guide the Demons just short of reaching the state tournament.
Robinette’s efforts weren’t in vain as he was named to the Colorado High School Activities Association’s second-team all-state and was the lone Demon who made it.
Two other DHS players were recognized for their contributions, as senior attackman Corbin Randle and goalie Dylan Gaver were each named to the Class 5A/4A Mountain League honorable mention team.
Robinette led the Demons with a historic senior year and finished with 59 goals and assisted on 35 goals. He averaged 6.7 points per game, took 130 shots on goal and had a shooting percentage of 45.4 percent.
He became the school’s all-time leader in points with 266 and surpassed his older brother, Kyle, who finished with 258 and is the only player to score over 100 career goals and record 100 points in program history. In addition, Cullen’s point production increased dramatically his final year, as he recorded eight more assists than last season (27) and his 59 goals scored was 16 more than last year’s total (43).
His single-game season-best was an eight-goal performance against Prairie View in a 19-10 win in March, and he had his best point total against Sandia Prep of New Mexico in early March when he recorded 10 assists and scored four times for 14 points. He recorded an assist in every game this season but two.
Senior attackman Corbin Randle was on the receiving end of much of the Demons’ good fortune, as he scored 39 goals for DHS, added 18 assists and finished the season with 57 points. The best performance of the season from Randle came against Englewood, when he scored six times and assisted twice in an 17-7 win.
He recorded eight points twice, against the Pirates, and the following day against Prairie View.
Rounding out the trio was Gaver, who was instrumental in net this season for the Demons. In 14 games played, he made 180 saves on 334 shots faced, which was a save percentage of 53.8%. Gaver used his lightning-quick speed to help set up the DHS offense, as well.
Despite having the goalie moniker tied to him, he was much more than that, as he assisted in five games this season for Durango, including twice in the final game of the season, a narrow 10-8 loss to Montrose. He gave up an average of 12.2 goals per game.
The Demons will look to rebuild next year around junior midfielder Dylan Berridge, junior defenseman Sam Rodgers and sophomore attackman Rocco Estes.
The Durango high school girls lacrosse team did not have any all-state selections when CHSAA announced the news on Monday, but the Demons did have three players who made the all-conference team.
Senior attack Kiara Valley was named to the second-team Mountain League squad after she led Durango in goals with 40, and was vital for DHS’ offense, as she scored the game-winning goal to help DHS get its first overtime win in team history.
Fellow senior midfielder Autumn Rymerson was also named to the second-team and played a key role on offense as well. Rymerson scored over 15 goals on the season, which included two late goals against Grand Junction to help force the overtime, which led to Valley’s eventual game-winner. Rounding out the list was goalie Virginia Herr, who kept the Demons in games and made plenty of timely saves this season.
The Demons will be returning key players next year, including Gwyneth Irwin, who was an exciting spark plug for the DHS offense.
