Chapman Hill, Purgatory to host events this weekend

Fans of freestyle skiing can get their fill in the coming weeks starting with a moguls competition at Chapman Hill and a slopestyle event at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort this weekend.

The Purgatory Freestyle and Snowboard Teams also have organized a weekly Wednesday night freeride series at Chapman that will kick off next week.

Coming off some strong recent performances, members of the Purgatory teams will be aiming for more top finishes Saturday and Sunday at the USSA freestyle moguls event at Chapman and the USASA slopestyle event at Purgatory. The slopestyle competition will be open to skiers, too.

Teams from Winter Park, Vail, Summit County and Telluride will challenge Purgatory freestyle skiers Saturday and Sunday at the Chapman Hill moguls event, sponsored by Durango Orthopedic and Spine Colorado.

The event will feature single-run moguls Saturday with dual moguls Sunday. The action will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

The slopestyle event at Purgatory will be held Sunday after slalom and giant slalom races Saturday.

Freeride series

The Wednesday night Chapman Hill Freeride Series will start next week and run through Feb. 19. The series will give local skiers and snowboarders an opportunity to participate in fun events while testing the waters of freeride competition.

“Chapman Hill is the perfect arena, and a great place for kids to come and play,” said Tim Kuss, Chapman Hill Ski Area manager. “The unique venue of Chapman Hill offers a great opportunity for any local kid to participate.”

Registration for the first-event rail jam will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapman House at the base of the hill. Entry fee is $15, which includes a lift ticket, or $10 for Chapman Hill season-pass holders. Riders age 12 and younger will compete from 5 to 6 p.m. with riders age 13 and older competing after 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to different age classes. Competing on the complex terrain of Upper Hades and the Purgatory Nastar Race Arena, 16-year-old Quinn Haughey posted the fastest time of the day in all four of his giant slalom and slalom races last weekend in the first USASA Southwest Colorad Series competition of the season.

Team riders Emily Williams, 14, Quinn Hoover, 13, Madeline Lochte-Bono, 11, and Joshua Dearien, 11, also won each of their four races. Keiran Eagen, 15, was second in all four of his races.

At a competition earlier in the month in Vail, Parker Norvell won the event for Skeri Men (age 16-18).
