And the West is History

100 years ago: “There is something in the air at this time of the year that has a very drying effect on the nostrils and air passages of the head and throat. A cough and cold frequently follows these symptoms, and Foley’s Honey and Tar Compound is a strong demulcent remedy that gives prompt relief. Use it for coughs, colds, tickling throats, hoarseness and bronchial coughs. Contains no opiates.”

75 years ago: “Anticipation is indeed running high among the very youngest for invitations were issued by Mary Ann Harris and Donald Burnett for a Halloween party. An advance tip hinted that the basement at the Burnett home was being put into readiness for the frolic, there were going to be surprises galore and thrills to wring shrieks from the more timorous guests.”

50 years ago: “Estimated loss – one tree house. Durango firemen have to fight fires of every description and Sunday afternoon was no exception as they were called to 149 West 32nd Street where flames were sweeping through the elaborate tree house at Police Chief Hubertus’ residence. The blaze evidently started when some children were playing with matches in the lofty perch. No injuries were reported but all that was left of the house were a few charred boards.”

25 years ago: “Durango attorney Elizabeth Callard was named La Plata County’s new judge by Gov. Roy Romer. Callard, 37, will replace Judge Pat Hall.”
