And the West is History

This picture appeared in the Sept. 22, 1988, Herald. The cutline read: “This picture from the original Seth Thomas catalog (inset) is the clockworks from the 1891 La Plata County Courthouse which is being repaired by a Durango clocksmith and which will be placed in the new courthouse tower on East Second Avenue as shown. A small clock face, barely visible in the drawing, is the master clock that drives the four clock faces. Those clock faces will be attached to rods pointing up from the top of the clockworks. The actual size of the clockworks pictured is 5 by 5 foot.”

50 years ago: “City police were checked out in the use of their new portable radar speed detector, and wrote their first ticket using the new device. They clocked a woman driver doing 38 miles an hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone on Eighth Street.”

25 years ago: “For all you men who know what a monk spot is, and know exactly how shiny yours is, listen up. The first prescription drug proven to grow hair is now available in Durango. Rogaine, the new anti-balding drug from Upjohn Co., was approved in August by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. While it doesn’t promise an instant full head of hair, it does stimulate hair growth – on certain men. Dr. Lawrence Gaughan, a Durango dermatologist, said he already has prescribed Rogaine to 20 or so of his patients.”
