Britain tops medal table at track worlds

LONDON – Britain finished top of the medals table, as Laura Trott claimed her second gold before Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish teamed up to win the Madison on Sunday at the track cycling world championships.

It meant host Britain ended the five-day event with five gold medals.

Trott won her second title, taking the omnium to add to her gold in the scratch race.

The Olympic champion was 12 points ahead going into the sixth and final event, the points race, and she extended her lead to finish ahead of Laurie Berthon of France and Sarah Hammer of the United States, a medalist in five of the last six worlds.

Wiggins and Cavendish rounded off the competition by winning the Madison, despite the latter coming off his bike.

Ha Na Jang four better than the rest of the field

SINGAPORE – South Korea’s Ha Na Jang enhanced her growing reputation as one of the hottest players on the LPGA Tour by winning the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament by four strokes Sunday.

Playing like a seasoned veteran, the 23-year-old South Korean fired six birdies and an eagle in a brilliant final round of 7-under 65 to finish at 19-under at Singapore’s Sentosa Golf Club.

Back from injury, Shiffrin sensational once again

JASNA, Slovakia – Mikaela Shiffrin won a women’s World Cup slalom by a massive 2.36-second margin Sunday while Frida Hansdotter of Sweden finished 10th to wrap up the discipline title.

In tough conditions because of snowfall and rain, the Olympic champion from the United States posted the fastest time in both runs to finish ahead of Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. Veronika Velez-Zuzulova of Slovakia was 2.77 back in third.

Shiffrin is unbeaten in slalom racing since February 2015 but can’t win the discipline title this season having missed five races during a two-month injury layoff.

Kristoffersen locks up slalom title with one to spare

KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia – Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway won the World Cup slalom title with a race to spare after finishing runner-up to Marcel Hirscher in the next-to-last event Sunday.

Having won six of nine slaloms this season, Kristoffersen holds an insurmountable 111-point lead over the Austrian going into the final race of the season at St. Moritz, Switzerland, in two weeks.

It’s Kristoffersen’s first crystal globe, and the second slalom title for a Norwegian skier after Kjetil Andre Aamodt won it 16 years ago.

Seasons starts bumpy for Rapids vs. Quakes

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Chris Wondolowski scored in the opening seconds of the second half, and the San Jose Earthquakes edged the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Sunday in the Major League Soccer season opener.

Wondolowski headed in his 110th MLS goal from the penalty spot past goaltender Zac MacMath off a cross from Alberto Quintero just 19 seconds into the second half. He is four goals shy of tying Ante Razov for fourth-most MLS career goals. Quintero joined the Quakes this season from Mexico’s Lobos BUAP.

The Rapids outshot the Quakes 18-7, but San Jose goaltender David Bingham was solid with five saves.

The Quakes ran their undefeated streak against Colorado to 13 games.
