Led by Bridget Goddard, Bayfield's five cross country girls amassed 201 points Saturday at the Joe I. Vigil Open in Alamosa, capturing ninth place.
Hosts Alamosa High School, the reigning 3A state champs, won the meet.
Goddard ran into 15th place with a time of 21:57.44.
After non-scoring entrants were factored out, junior Rachel Cooper won 31 points for her 35th-place finish. Junior Amber Johnson took 68th place with 26:26.24. Freshman Sarah Ruybal took 72nd with 27:05.70 in her varsity debut, joined by Mylee Sanders in 93rd place.
Senior Brandon Stuever paced the undermanned Wolverine boys with a 59th-place finish, crossing the finish line in 20:28.63. Junior Joey Sandrey wasn't far behind in 67th at 20:47.90, and junior Justis Herrera placed 87th with 24:46.30.
Neither sophomore Sloan Mazur nor junior Bryan Gram, Bayfield's 1-2 at the previous weekend's meet in Grand Junction, ran in San Luis Valley, and neither did senior Lexa Fleming, the girl's #3 runner last weekend.
Bayfield will co-host the Southwest Sunset Classic with Durango High School at 6 p.m. tonight at Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango. Middle school girls race at 6 p.m.; mid school boys at 6:30; JV girls at 7 p.m.; JV boys at 7:30; Community 5K at 8; varsity girls at 8:30 and varsity boys cap the evening at 9 p.m.
The Community 5K is a fundraiser for both school programs, and the fee to register tonight is $30. All runners are welcome.
