Money workshop to be held March 30

“Learn how You are with Money” will be presented from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. March 30 in Bowman Hall, 419 San Juan Dive, by Allison Andersen with Durango Personal Financial Coaching.

This free workshop will help people talk about money, understand spending habits and find their money personality. Using a hands-on learning tool, Andersen will help people understand how people’s spending habits, attitudes and values affect their financial decisions and well-being. Couples are encouraged to attend together.

Chamber After Hours at El Rancho

The Durango Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at El Rancho Tavern, 975 Main Ave.

The cost is $7 for chamber members and guests.

Caregiving and work to be discussed

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will host “Being Committed to Caregiving while Staying Committed to Your Job” at noon Wednesday at First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St.

The program will be presented by Erin Youngblood with Evenings Porch Assisted Living and Lindy Rucker of PASCO/Southwest Inc. The cost is $10 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers and includes a lunch catered by Three Peaks Deli and Grill. Reservations are required.

Leading Edge series to take place

The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center in conjunction with local area business partners is sponsoring a Leading Edge Strategic Planning Series for new and experienced business owners and managers.

The 12-week course will take place from April 15 to July 1. The Business Management and Planning Course to Master Essential Skills for Starting, Managing and Growing your Business Wisely is appropriate for all business types, including agriculture and nonprofits. Participants will master money management, budgeting and accounting; understand what their value to customers is; establish best pricing and marketing practices; learn to plan to make a profit, test ideas, explore possibilities and determine feasibility; gain access to resources and people; and design a business that works for them.

Tuition includes 36 hours of instruction from qualified presenters, two members of the business may attend, five hours of individual counseling, access to Small Business Development Center resources, opportunities to address individual needs and cash awards for top three business plans submitted.

Full tuition is $300 or $50 per session. Scholarships may be available. Classes will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at First Southwest Bank, 249 Navajo Trail Drive, Pagosa Springs.

Animas High announces new hire

Animas High School announces that it has hired Ashley Hein as development director.

Hein studied theater, early childhood and humanities at Fort Lewis College. She began her nonprofit career at the Durango Arts Center, where she started a number of children’s theater programs. After teaching at Durango Early Learning Center, Hein spent the better part of a decade working at the Powerhouse Science Center, in a number of managerial roles.

Maria’s Bookshop announces hire

Maria’s Bookshop welcomes Kevin Johnson as a new bookseller to its staff.

Johnson studied literature and philosophy at Fort Lewis College and the University of Colorado. As a student, he taught a film interpretation and analysis course, presented at the Durango and Taos Film Festivals and attended the Cannes Film Festival.

Returning for his second stint at Maria’s Bookshop, he presents a passion for poetry, prose and philosophy.

Health department announces new hires

The San Juan Basin Health Department Single Entry Point Program announces the hiring of Sylven Walker Watson as its new case manager.

Walker Watson previously worked at the La Plata County Department of Human Services for six years as an eligibility worker. She has been collaborating with the health department’s case managers for years regarding the Options for Long Term Care program that offers services which assist elderly and individuals with disabilities in staying in their home as long as possible.

The health department also welcomes Michelle Wilson. Wilson has a previous work history in local public health in rural Minnesota. In Minnesota she led the planning and coordination efforts for a program focused on obesity and tobacco prevention.
