Joseph Bruchac – writer of poetry, short stories, novels, anthologies and music that reflect his Abenaki Native American heritage and traditions – will visit these Durango School District 9-R schools:

Durango schools to host Thanksgiving meals
Elementary schools in Durango School District 9-R will host these Thanksgiving meals:
Animas Valley Elementary: kindergarten and first grade from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 20; second and third grades from 11:40 to 12:10 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grades from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.
Florida Mesa Elementary: Preschool at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 21; kindergarten and first grade at 11 a.m.; Headstart at 11:30 a.m.; second and third grades at 11:45 a.m.; and fourth and fifth grades at 12:30 p.m.
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary: Prekindergarten to second grade at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 22; and third, fourth and fifth grades at 12:15 p.m.
Park Elementary: Preschool and kindergarten from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Nov. 21; first grade from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m.; second grade from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; third grade from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.; and fourth and fifth grades from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m.

Fort Lewis Mesa to host Thanksgiving celebration
The Thanksgiving celebrations at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will begin with an orchestra presentation at 10 a.m. Friday in the gym, then at 10:15 a.m., the Turkey Trot.
Animas Valley Elementary to offer Turkey Trot today
Animas Valley Elementary School will host these events at its Turkey Trot today:
Fourth and fifth grades will participate in song at 10:10 a.m. in the gym.
The warm up for the Turkey Trot will take place at 10:20 a.m. outside.
The Turkey Trot for grades kindergarten to second grade will be held from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the soccer field.
The Turkey Trot for third to fifth grades will take place from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the Nature Trail.
The Turkey Trot will end at 10:45 a.m.
Durango special-education committee to meet today
The Special Education Advisory Committee invites parents, educators and community members to its meeting at 5:15 p.m. today on the third floor of the Durango School District 9-R administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Needham Elementary selling Be Local Coupon Books
Needham Elementary School is taking orders for the 2014 Be Local Coupon Books.
All proceeds raised from coupon-book sales at Needham will help pay for field trips, book purchases and other educational tools.
The coupon books are $18 plus tax, and prepayment is required. The books will be available for order through Friday.

Riverview Elementary students gathering used cellphones
Riverview Elementary School is collecting used cellphones through Nov. 29.
Donations to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program will provide troops with free calling cards.
Gently-used cellular phones can be donated to Riverview Elementary School, 2900 Mesa Ave.
Presentation to address financial aid for college
The Fort Lewis College Office of Financial Aid will present “Financial Aid 101: How to Pay for College” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Durango High School library.
This free presentation will have valuable information about how to submit the Free Application for Federal Aid and address the different types of financial aid available.
There will be a question-and-answer session.
Florida Mesa to collect items for Durango Food Bank
Florida Mesa Elementary School will collect food for Durango Food Bank until Thanksgiving break.
Students will be able to wear a hat each day they donate a food item.
After Thanksgiving break, the school will continue to collect donations for the Food Bank and will collect items for Project Merry Christmas’ hat and mitten tree.

Life-Long Learning lecture to be held at FLC on Thursday
The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Women in Islam: A World of Contradictions” by Dennis Aronson at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130 at FLC.
Aronson, who lived and worked in three Middle Eastern countries for eight years, will discuss the present status of Muslim women in this different part of the world, what the Quran says about them, the origin and meaning of the veil, the reasons for women’s subjugation and reforms that are underway.
Mountain Middle School students to present exhibition
Mountain Middle School sixth-grade students will present “The Rabbit-Hole and the Looking-Glass” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
The sixth-graders will exhibit their personal connections to the books Alice and the Adventures of Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. Students also will sell the book they created for this project.
The Mountain Middle School Board also will meet at 5:15 p.m. today at the school.
Columbine Christian to offer Thanksgiving program
Columbine Christian School will host its annual Thanksgiving program from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the school, 1775 Florida Road.
Each class in grades kindergarten to eight will present a song, dramatic reading, poem or skit about gratitude. Participants are asked to enter through the main church doors.

Deadline extended for music scholarships
Music in the Mountains is extending its deadline for the Shining Star scholarships to Dec. 5.
These scholarships will pay up to half the cost of private music lessons for deserving students in Durango School District 9-R for spring semester 2014.
The criteria for such scholarships are financial need and musical ability.
Parents and students can request an application from the student’s music teacher or download an application form from the education section of www.musicinthemountains.com.
The application form should be submitted to the student’s school music teacher, who also must write a brief recommendation in order to complete the application.
