And the West is History

100 years ago: “For the purpose of getting the Cave Basin road in shape for early spring travel to the new mining camp, the young Ignacio commercial club has arranged for a ‘Good Roads Day’ to be held within the next two or three days at which every citizen will be asked to turn out and work the roads.”

75 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “Salesmen wanted – Man with car for lifetime position. Good pay; for proof apply Room 406, Strater Hotel.”

50 years ago: “Spring arrived in Durango at 7:10 a.m. MST. It comes on March 20 instead of the 21 this year, because of the extra day in February due to leap year. It has not been a balmy spring day here, but it has been sunny and there are crocuses in bloom all over town.”

25 years ago: “’Tis the season to be wary of wildlife on the roads. In 1988, 412 deer and 30 elk were killed on roads in the Colorado San Juan Basin. It was slightly less than 1987, in which 530 deer and 30 elk were killed.”
