An Ignacio man accused of running over his girlfriend with a car last month in Bayfield was charged Monday in La Plata County District Court.
Case Fields, 31, was charged with second-degree reckless assault resulting in serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon; reckless vehicular assault; false imprisonment; and reckless driving.
The most serious charge holds a sentence of up to 16 years in prison, said Judge Suzanne Carlson.
Fields was arrested Oct. 28 on suspicion of backing over his girlfriend, Janelle Bilyeu, while she was exiting his vehicle in downtown Bayfield.
The incident occurred after the couple had an argument about money, which caused Fields to drive erratically and bang his head on the steering wheel, Bilyeu told the Bayfield Marshal’s Office.
Bilyeu said she suffered several fractures to her right leg, which required a metal rod for support. She also required stitches in her elbow.
As part of the filing of charges, Fields may not “harass, injure, molest, intimidate, threaten, retaliate against or tamper with any witness to or victim of” the incident.
Fields was released on a $6,000 bond, and told Carlson he will hire a private attorney.
Fields previously served about 3½ years of a six-year prison sentence for choking Bilyeu in 2011 in front of a Durango restaurant.
Fields next court appearance is 10 a.m. Nov. 28.
