Arts Briefs for Oct. 4

‘Cabaret’ opens Thursday at Durango Arts Center

The Durango Arts Center will present nine performances of the Tony Award-winning musical “Cabaret” in October.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 and 17; 8 p.m. Oct. 11 and 18; 5 and 9 p.m. Oct. 12 and 19; and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Oct. 20.

All tickets are $25 (except Oct. 11).

The Oct. 11 performance will be a special “Cabaret” costume party fundraiser, “Burlesque in Berlin,” from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The event will feature special preshow performances along with appetizers and drinks, as well as the musical starting at 8 p.m. Travel back in time to a divinely decadent atmosphere of an underground cabaret while enjoying German appetizers, wine and beer – all to get you in the mood for an evening in DAC’s Kit Kat Club. A special preperformance “silks” show will be presented by artists Hattie Miller and Steve Ward along with special Cabaret preshow acts.

Discovery Museum to host two weekend events

The Durango Discovery Museum will present its latest free Pub Science lecture, “The Psychology of Happiness: What Durangotangs Know” with Fort Lewis professor Dr. Brian Burke, at 6 p.m. today.

Feeding a thirst for science and a passion for craft beer, Pub Science provides presentations paired with all-local brews available from Powerhouse Eatery + Libations.

Burke’s 30-minute, interactive presentation will cover decades of research on the variables that may affect human happiness. Participants will be asked to consider the critical ingredients for living a happy life as his talk highlights what science has revealed to be the five keys to happiness.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, the museum will host Robot Rumpus 3.0, the third annual robotics-themed cocktail party fundraiser. The event will feature interactive robotic stunts and demonstrations, live music, specialty drinks and other maker-geek surprises.

Tickets cost $35 (age 21 and older), available at www.durangodiscovery.org. The cost includes catered food and two drinks. Self-fabricated robotic attire is strongly encouraged.
