FLC softball goes down then back up

Skyhawks split 2 games in ‘home’ opening pod

Four runs here and four runs there made a big difference for the Fort Lewis College softball team.

FLC (6-10, 2-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) split its first two “home” games against Adams State and Western New Mexico on Sunday in Bloomfield, N.M.

The games were supposed to be the home opener for the Skyhawks, but Saturday’s wet-weather forced them south in search of a dryer diamond.

FLC allowed four runs in the first inning against Western New Mexico in their first game of the day. That led to an 8-4 loss.

The Mustangs scored their four runs in the first inning all on singles with players on base.

“They were just finding little holes on the field,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said. “We got two outs, and the third out was the tough one.”

Mary Onthon hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for Western New Mexico to put the Mustangs up 7-1.

Kamali’i Peneku led FLC with two hits and two runs batted in.

Victoria Johnson (2-4) took the loss for the Skyhawks, allowing seven earned runs in four innings of work.

FLC rebounded with a four-spot of its own in the nightcap against Adams State, a 13-4 victory over the Grizzlies.

“Softball’s a game of momentum,” Zeiter said. “We started from the first inning swinging the bats well.”

Destinee DeHerrera hit a three-run homer and Adriana Rosthenhausler slapped an RBI-single in the inning.

DeHererra finished with four RBIs to lead the team while Missy Fundora, Chelsea Rodriguez and Rosthenhausler all drove in three.

The Skyhawks continue RMAC pod play at 10 a.m. Monday against Western New Mexico and will face Adams State at 2 p.m.
