’Hawks lax gets smart

FLC lands 7 on all-academic team
Jessica Norby led Fort Lewis in scoring, then was one of seven selections to the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s all-academic team for her work in the classroom.

Four Skyhawks never have missed the party. One’s back for a second time. And those five brought two new friends this year.

The Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced its third-ever all-academic team Monday. Senior Jenna Steele and juniors Amanda Cawker, Jessica Norby and Toki Tajima-Prodnuk all earned their third such honor, and sophomore Amanda Hoffmeyer was selected for the second time in as many years. Joining the repeat selections were freshman Carly Smoke and junior Kylie Smith.

To be eligible for selection, a player must posess a grade-point average of 3.30 or higher while playing in at least half of her team’s conference games. The WILA doesn’t separate selections into first, second or third teams.

Steele carried a 3.75 GPA while majoring in exercise science. She native scooped up 31 groundballs and caused 20 turnovers to tie for the team lead .

Steele was tied in both of those categories with Cawker, the WILA’s Defensive Player of the Year. Cawker carried a 3.62 GPA as a political science major.

Norby had a 3.48 mark in environmental geology as a junior. The Chaska, Minn., product led the Skyhawks with 22 goals, 11 assists and 33 points.

Tajima-Prodnuk, a San Diego product, had a 3.66 GPA her junior year while majoring in biology. On the field, she scored once and had two assists for the Skyhawks.

Hoffmeyer, a sophomore from St. Louis, had a 3.64 GPA in business administration this year, all the while forcing 15 turnovers and scooping 26 groundballs, good for third and fourth on the team, respectively.

Smoke acquitted herself nicely to college coursework as a freshman, carrying a 3.47 GPA while still deciding on a major. On the field, she scored once, had an assist and picked up three groundballs.

Smith checked in with a 3.32 GPA in business administration as a junior. She scored 11 goals this season for the Skyhawks.
