Great news: Durango city residents’ demands for climate action recently inspired our City Council to pass a climate resolution.
Hundreds of residents’ comments to Durango’s city manager in August pleaded for a dedicated funding stream for climate action, and a transparent process for that action.
Thank you, council, for the Nov. 5 hearing. It’s vital that we all be involved in city climate action: our collective survival depends on it.
Two things need to happen: We need to tune in to our city’s efforts to address climate change, and our city needs to make information readily available.
In order to progress as an engaged community, we residents need a comprehensive, easily accessed data source for regularly scheduled reports about climate action progress, specific accountability for funds spent by each department and a detailed city timeline reaching to council’s climate goals (50% renewable electricity and 30% carbon reduction by the year 2030).
How will we get there? How are we doing?
Currently, such data is tucked away in multiple places in the maze-like city website.
We also need a dedicated annual climate funding stream, and a new city manager demonstrably committed to climate abatement.
Please, pledge to show up at City Hall, 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. Hear about City Council’s budget for 2020, thank your council for the climate resolution and let them know we’re awake and engaged, demanding climate action and accountability.
Together, let’s create a process worthy of the whole-hearted trust our children invest in us.
