Disney World patron finds loaded gun on ride

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A Walt Disney World patron on a ride with her grandson found a loaded gun on her seat.

Officials said Wednesday that the woman found the pistol on the Dinosaur ride at Animal Kingdom.

The owner of the gun, Angelo Lista, told authorities that he discovered his firearm was missing several minutes after leaving the ride. He has a concealed weapons permit.

Lista told authorities he didn’t know Disney World patrons weren’t allowed to bring guns. He said he thought the security checkpoint at the entrance to the central Florida park was only so guards could check bags for bombs or explosives.

Recent rail wrecks belie improved safety record

OMAHA, Neb. – The nation’s railroads are safer than ever, despite accidents like this week’s fiery derailment in Maryland.

Derailments and crossing accidents have steadily declined nationwide even as businesses have come to increasingly rely on trains to move their raw materials and products.

The number of train accidents fell 43 percent to 1,712 between 2003 and last year, while the number of incidents at rail crossings dropped 34 percent to 1,960. And the total number of deaths declined 19 percent to 705 over the decade, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.

Railroads have been investing in their equipment and track, their employee training and in technological tools to help detect problems before they can derail a train.

Ariz. high court denies review in Arias case

PHOENIX – The Arizona Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to hear an appeal on whether a judge improperly allowed prosecutors to seek a death sentence for Jodi Arias in the 2008 stabbing and shooting of her former boyfriend.

Arias’ lawyers filed the mid-trial appeal with the state high court three months ago after Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens denied a mistrial motion and a mid-level state court then refused to consider an appeal.
