Residents encouraged to be careful with fire
The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center reports that fire danger is moderate in much of southwestern Colorado, but conditions are dry at lower to middle elevations. Residents are encouraged to be careful with fire during the Fourth of July weekend by following these tips:
Call or visit the nearest San Juan National Forest office to find out if fire danger is low, moderate, high or extreme.
Clear the area around campfires.
Have a bucket of water, shovel and other implements on hand in case wind or other conditions cause a campfire to get out of control.
Never leave a campfire unattended.
Extinguish smoking materials only in cleared areas free of vegetation or debris.
Don’t park cars or recreational vehicles over dry vegetation.
Use an approved spark arrester on off-road vehicles and chain saws.
Fireworks are always illegal on national forest lands.
To report a fire on federal lands, call 385-1324.
Colorado’s Water Plan subject of workshop
The Ditch & Reservoir Company Alliance is involving ditch and reservoir companies in Colorado’s Water Plan by hosting a workshop from 8 a.m. to noon July 19 at the Florida Grange, 656 Colorado Highway 172.
Colorado’s Water Plan is a state-driven effort to help find solutions to the demand for water.
The workshop will include presentations about the state water plan and ditch company planning. Ditch and reservoir companies and their farmer/rancher shareholders will be able to comment on the state water plan.
Ditch companies also will learn about the importance of their internal planning so they can do well in an uncertain future.
