Girls golf opens season

The Durango High School girls golf team improved between the first and second rounds of the spring season.

Durango opened the year with back-to-back tournaments on the Western Slope with the Cobble Creek Invitational on Tuesday and the Black Canyon Invitational on Wednesday.

Durango placed last out of six teams Tuesday on the par-72 Cobble Creek course but finished third Wednesday on the par-70 Black Canyon course.

Rifle was the top team both days, shooting 50-over-par on Tuesday and 77-over as a team Wednesday. Masi Smith was the medalist both days with rounds of 5-over 77 at Cobble Creek and 8-over 78 at Black Canyon. Her teammate, Elly Walters, tied her effort Wednesday.

Durango was led both days by Katrina Chandler, who tied for sixth at Cobble Creek and 20-over and was also sixth at Black Canyon at 26-over.

Faith Mewmaw placed ninth Wednesday at 30-over after posting 37-over and taking 19th Tuesday.

Lauren Biery tied for 11 at 28-over on Tuesday and placed 17th at 40-over on Wednesday. Madaeln Meier was 21st at 38-over Tuesday and 20th at 44-over. Claire Nickerson also played Wednesday and finished 22nd at 55-over.
