Why are we being gouged for propane?

As larger suppliers buy up our local propane services, the price goes up.

On Jan. 29, I was quoted $2.734 per gallon from “big fish” propane who bought up my former supplier. They own the tank, they call the shots and it is winter.

Two local propane providers quoted the prices they were charging on the same day. Their prices were $2.10 and $2 per gallon.

U.S. Energy Information Administration’s residential price for Colorado is $2.17 as of Jan. 21.

Local services are always at risk of offers they cannot refuse. This example about a commodity we rely on, especially in winter, puts the consumer in a trap.

The company has not responded to my request for an explanation.
