Power outage affects 3,000 customers

A power outage in the Durango area affected about 3,000 customers for about an hour Thursday evening, said Indiana Reed, La Plata Electric Association spokeswoman.

The power was restored to many customers by about 7:10 p.m. Other customers in isolated areas were still without power as of 7:30 p.m.

The majority of people affected were in the Animas Valley, she said. Additionally, the outage extended from the city limits to out by Edgemont Ranch.

The fluctuating power many might have experienced prior to the outage was caused by the wet heavy snow, she said. The snow sticks to the wires and trees causing discharging blinks.

The LPEA computer system automatically shuts off as a safety precaution.

Also, a tree branch fell and snapped a power line, Reed said.
