Pine River center to offer classes
The Pine River Community Learning Center will offer these classes:
Participants can learn how and why to compost from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 29 at the Pine River Community Learning Center in Ignacio, 535 Candelaria Heights. The price is $25.
A beginning photography class taught by a professional photographer will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Pine River Community Learning Center in Bayfield, 54 Mill St. The price is $25. People will need to register on or before Thursday.
Students can learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, time management, how to read a syllabus and what a Learning Management System is from 1 to 3 p.m. or from 6 to 8 p.m. April 22 and 24. There is a $25 fee for an Accuplacer test.

FLC student-writing program to present
The Fort Lewis College Writing Program announces the Celebration of Student Writing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Attendees should enter through the east doors of Jones Hall to pick up a map of the events, which will be held in Jones and Noble halls.
Participants will see the work of Composition II level students. Conference-style presentations, visual displays and other presentations will show how students are thinking about current issues and events, community action plans, business development and other issues.
‘Taste of Music’ to be held at FLC
The Music in the Mountains Goes to School Program will be a curriculum partner with Durango School District 9-R.
In conjunction with the Fort Lewis College Music Department, the program will host third- and fourth-graders from Durango and regional schools, to the “Taste of Music,” a program that demonstrates different instruments and musical styles through performances.
FLC music students will perform their concert twice, at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Community Concert Hall for the students.
Durango school board to meet May 20
The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. May 20 in the board room at the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.
Sunnyside Elementary will be the highlighted school.

DHS Poetry Slam to take place today
The Durango High School English Department will host its annual poetry slam competition from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
This annual event promotes literacy and encourages teens to use the power of words to bring attention to the everyday issues of their lives.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. All area high school students interested in competing should sign up by 5:15 p.m. in the center’s theater.
This year’s prizes have been donated by Maria’s Bookshop and Mild to Wild Rafting.
Open house to highlight scholarships, loans
“Girls’ Fun-ding Night Out,” an open house about educational scholarships and loans for women, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Durango Public Library in Program Room 1, 1900 East Third Ave.
Local chapters of the PEO Sisterhood will sponsor the event at which participants can learn about a variety of opportunities. The Women’s Resource Center scholarship also will be presented. Refreshments will be served.
Beef bids sought for Farm to School program
Krista Garand, supervisor of student nutrition for Durango School District 9-R, is accepting beef bids for the 2014-15 Farm to School program.

Rush Night to feature athletics, activities
The Durango High School Athletic/Activities Department will conduct a “Rush Night” for all students in grades eight to 11 and their parents from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 28 in the cafeteria.
This event will include athletics and band.
Coaches and sponsors will be available for parents and students to talk to about individual programs, summer camps, open gyms and more.
Special education committee to meet
The Special Education Advisory Committee invites parents, educators and community members to join in learning more about advocating for students with special needs in the school system.

Continuing education classes available at FLC
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these courses:
“Organic Gardening: Creating Living Soil, Raised Beds & Organic Fertility” and “Wildly Abundant Gardening: Natural Disease and Pest Control” will be taught by Frank LeBeau from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and April 26, respectively. Participants will learn to garden successfully, create living soil and grow healthy plants that can resist disease and insect attacks. Each class is $79.
“Nonprofit Business Model Design with Lean Canvas” taught by Bill Smith; “Fundraising Trends & Techniques,” taught by Reney Fagan, CEO of the Colorado Nonprofit Association; and “Best Practices to Keep Your Staff Stable,” taught by Paulette Church and Tim Kroes, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, April 23 and April 30, respectively. These classes are designed for people in the nonprofit sector and are open to staff members, board members and people interested in learning about a career path in the field. The cost is $49 each.

Ignacio to host kindergarten events
Students entering kindergarten at Ignacio Elementary School for 2014-15 are invited to attend these events:
“Incoming Kinder Transition Day” will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. April 23. The day will include visits to each classroom, introductions to school personnel and a tour of the school. Parents may pick up registration packets at this time as well.
“Dial R Screening” for incoming kindergarten students who are not enrolled in Head Start will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. May 27.

Bayfield preschool accepting applications
Bayfield Early Education Programs will be taking applications for the 2014-15 preschool year April 25.
Parents may download the application from www.beeppreschool.org or pick up an application at the preschool, 645 Fox Farm Circle.
Applications will be taken from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school. Families may choose full- or half-day classroom attendance, an afterschool program and a Friday enrichment class for their child.
The school is in session for nine months and follows the Bayfield School District calendar. Children must be at least 3 years old and potty trained to attend. Four-year-old are given priority because of school readiness.
BEEP offers 20 Colorado Preschool Program slots for children who are educationally at risk. Fifteen factors are considered, such as language and social needs, abuse in the family, learning disabilities in the family and qualifying for low or reduced lunch.
This program is available only to children who are going on to kindergarten the next year. In addition to the CPP program, parents with moderate or low income may qualify for a sliding scale, apply for scholarships or receive tuition aid from Colorado Child Care Assistance Program. Slots will fill quickly.

An underclassmen college night called “Gearing Up” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The ninth- and 10th-grade exhibition will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. May 1. Ninth-grade humanities students will exhibit their “Brave New World” project and perform William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which will take place in the outdoor amphitheater. The first class will perform at 5 p.m. and the second class at 6 p.m. The 10th-grade will host its “Poetry Café” and “Geometry in Perspective.” Ninth-grade Earth science students will exhibit their topographic maps of a small section of land in Twin Buttes. Ninth-grade Spanish students will exhibit their independent projects.
The Senior Art Show will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. May 1 at Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave. Gabe Garcia will be the featured freshmen artist who will present alongside this year’s seniors.
