Participants should check in at the front office. People must bring proof of address, birth certificate and a copy of the child’s immunization records. A child must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
In addition, Durango School District 9-R will offer preschool services. Information about all the preschool opportunities will be available at the preschool/kindergarten registrations.

The Colorado Master Farm Homemaker guild is offering a $500 scholarship to a Colorado woman with an agriculture background.
Known by the guild as the “Second Chance Scholarship,” it will be given to someone who has had her college education interrupted or postponed and is hoping to attend a college, trade school or a secondary education institution.
Homemakers are encouraged to apply. Requirements are: three names of reference, biographical statement of work history, community involvement, future goals and a statement why the applicant feels the scholarship should be awarded to her.
All applications must be complete when returned by May 15. The award must be used in the year it is received. The guild reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

Suzanne Jackson’s eighth-grade science class will exhibit “Mission: Space” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school, 108 W. 31st St. Students have applied their knowledge of Kepler’s laws, phases of the moon, theories on the formation of the solar system and eclipses of the sun and moon to their choice of project. Students were able to choose a project based on their learning style. Final projects include science fiction short stories, debates, planning for life on another solar body and lesson plans for teaching science to fourth-graders. People who attend are encouraged to engage with and assess students’ professionalism and ability to articulate their learning.The board of directors will discuss the 2016-17 school budget at its meeting at 4:30 p.m. April 20 at the school.

The Durango Adult Education Center will offer Beginning Conversational Spanish and Nepali starting Monday.
The Conversational Spanish class will cover vocabulary relevant to everyday life and give participants a good foundation to begin speaking. The class will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays from April 20 to May 25.
The Conversational Nepali class is suited for people who have never spoken the language and want to learn about the culture and language for independent travel to Nepal. The class will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday from April 18 to May 23.

The Western Colorado Community Foundation will accept applications for The Lew Goodhart Memorial Scholarship starting Friday.
The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 15 college credit hours and are legal residents of Colorado.
Preference will be given to non-traditional students, defined as adult students age 22 or older or a re-entry student. Other requirements include a GPA of between 2.0 and 3.5 and demonstrated financial need.
Enrollment in a Colorado educational facility is required. Preference will be given to residents of Colorado’s Western Slope who are attending a Western Slope institution of higher education.
The application deadline is June 10. Two non-renewable scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded and are available through an online application at www.wc-cf.org.

The cost is $10 a bowl or $35 for a family of four. Money raised will help fight hunger. The event also will feature a silent auction.
The Southwest Colorado Bar Association will award scholarships to three seniors graduating from a high school in La Plata or San Juan county or to home-schooled seniors to assist in the student’s financial needs at college or vocational school.
The scholarship amount is $1,000 per student. The scholarship will be paid directly to the student and can be used for tuition, books, living expenses or other higher education related expenses. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Home-schooled seniors are required to provide information about their academic achievements.
Students may obtain applications for the scholarships from the counseling offices at each of the high schools or directly from the SWCBA Donations Committee, c/o William E. Zimsky, Esq., Abadie & Schill, P.C., 555 Rivergate Lane, Suite B4-180, Durango, CO, 81301.
The deadline for submitting the completed applications to the committee is May 2. The bar association will announce its decisions on the scholarship grants by May 13.
