The competition may not have been what the Skyhawks are accustomed to, but they still had to beat the teams in front of them, and they did so comfortably this weekend.
The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team downed Pacifica College 114-57 on Saturday in Alamosa to open the season 2-0.
Alex Herrera led a balanced scoring output Saturday with 18 points. Nick Tomsick chipped in 16 for the Skyhawks, who received 15 from Rasmus Bach, 13 from Lucas Archuleta and Cade Kloster and nine from Kody Salcido.
No stats beyond points were immediately available.
The Skyhawks outscored their two non-Division II opponents 222-119 this weekend, but there still seems to be plenty to work on according to the coaching staff heading into the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Thanksgiving Tournament in two weeks in Hilo, Hawaii.
“We just have so much to improve on before we go on our trip to Hawaii in pretty much every aspect of the game,” Fort Lewis associate head coach Bob Pietrack said.
Fort Lewis will have plenty of time to improve before the trip. The Skyhawks will have two weeks off before playing their next game Nov. 25 against the tournament’s host, Hawaii-Hilo.
“We have two weeks,” Pietrack said. “We have so much work to do that I think, as a staff, we need the two weeks to work on everything.”
