Colbrelli beats Demare in Stage 2 of Paris-Nice

AMILLY, France – Bahrain-Merida rider Sonny Colbrelli sprinted to victory Monday in the second stage of the Paris-Nice race.

The Italian started his sprint with about 200 meters (yards) to go and held off John Degenkolb to claim the most important win of his career by half-a-bike length.

Arnaud Demare was third on the flat 195-kilometer (121-mile) route from Rochefort-en-Yvelines to Amilly in the Loire valley.

“It’s the greatest victory of my career. It’s incredible,” said Colbrelli, who burst into tears after crossing the line. “I managed a perfect sprint and to beat riders like Degenkolb or even (Marcel) Kittel just shows that.”

Demare, who won the opening stage, remains in the overall lead, six seconds ahead of Julian Alaphilippe. Philippe Gilbert is third, a further 11 seconds behind.

Richie Porte had a torrid time in the crosswinds and fell more than 15 minutes off the pace as his hopes for a third title all but evaporated. Another two-time champion, Alberto Contador, is 1:18 behind Demare.

Chandler’s 36 points lead Nuggets past Kings

DENVER – Wilson Chandler scored a career-high 36 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, helping the Denver Nuggets weather the absence of Nikola Jokic to beat the Sacramento Kings 108-96 on Monday night.

The Nuggets snapped a five-game skid against Sacramento and remained entrenched in the Western Conference’s final playoff spot.

Jokic was a late scratch because of an illness. With him went 15.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists. Mason Plumlee stepped in and posted Jokic-like numbers — 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Darren Collison led seven Kings players in doubles figures with 17 points as they dropped their fifth straight. The team was coming off a tough loss the night before when Utah’s Rudy Gobert tipped in a missed jumper as time expired in overtime on a play that was initially ruled goaltending.

Redskins sign head coach Jay Gruden to extension

ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins have signed coach Jay Gruden to a multi-year contract extension.

Gruden was going into the fourth year of a five-year contract. The team announced the extension Monday morning.

The 50-year-old is the first coach to have his contract extended by owner Dan Snyder.

The Redskins missed the playoffs last season after making it in 2015. They’re 21-26-1 in three seasons under Gruden, who does not have a playoff win.

Extending Gruden comes during an uncertain offseason for the Redskins, who could lose two starting receivers in free agency and have placed the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins for the second consecutive year.

Raiders find new financing for Las Vegas stadium

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders told the NFL on Monday they have found a new partner to finance their proposed stadium in Las Vegas: Bank of America.

A person familiar with the Raiders’ plans said the team presented the new proposal with financing backed by Bank of America to the NFL’s stadium and finance committees. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan was not made public.

The Raiders had been seeking a new partner for the proposed $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat domed stadium after casino magnate Sheldon Adelson withdrew a $650 million pledge last month.

The state of Nevada has committed $750 million to the project, while the Raiders and NFL would pay the remaining $500 million if three-quarters of the league’s owners approve a move. A vote could come at the owners meetings later this month.
