Durango golf gets one last tuneup

Regionals next for DHS girls

The Durango High School girls golf team wrapped the regular season Monday by taking a trio to San Juan Country Club in Farmington.

Three golfers aren’t enough for a team score in New Mexico, so DHS didn’t merit a team total after Natalie Lyon was unable to make the trip, but the Demons got a 94 from Reiley Waldo, a 97 from Brooke Kniffin and a 108 from Jessica Pohlman.

“The players that didn’t go down there, they’re just getting caught up with school, getting everything ready to go for next week,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. Regionals are next week at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale.

Rawles said a couple of tweaks here and there would’ve provided a couple of better rounds for Waldo, who was a bit off with the putter, and Kniffin, who was unfamiliar with the course.

The expected regional lineup is Waldo, Kniffin, Lyon and Haleigh Lyon.

“If they shoot their scoring average, I think they’ll be able to (qualify for state),” Rawles said.
