I will vote no on Durango’s 1A ballot initiative to raise taxes to improve roads. We need better roads but my protest regards the lack of trust and arrogance the City Council (most members) demonstrates for its citizens’ views.
After the failure of the 2A tax initiative in the fall, the council convened listening sessions and compiled feedback. Rather than utilize those views, it decided to attempt another tax increase, ignoring the many suggestions to ask voters to reconsider using monies from the recreation tax funds. Why?
The recreation lobby, small in number, is powerful.
Councilors said they did not want to betray the citizens’ trust by asking citizens to reconsider how excess recreation tax funds should be spent. Going back to the citizens with new priorities is not a violation of trust. Asking citizens for input and ignoring that input betrays our trust.
Our council has become arrogant regarding citizen views.
Before raising the sales tax, which is regressive and difficult for those who find living in Durango unaffordable, let the new City Council and hopefully an independent and skilled finance committee do a thorough analysis of the budget and alternatives to new taxes.
How can city government be reorganized to reduce expenses, enhance revenue and ensure funding for future needs?
Two potential members of the council, Barbara Noseworthy and Kim Baxter, have the skills sets and experience to undertake this task. I am looking forward to a new city council more responsive to citizens and affordable living.
