CRAIG – Authorities in northwestern Colorado are investigating the poaching of a bull elk, apparently for its prominent antlers.
The animal’s headless carcass was found on a ranch in Dinosaur last week.
The Craig Daily Press reports that town residents regarded the familiar elk as docile.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the elk’s headless carcass was found Nov. 8.
Officer Garrett Smith said two people who were seen in the area apparently wanted the elk’s antlers, which he described as “unusual and distinct.”
Authorities said they have descriptions of two vehicles related to the incident, including a 1980s model pickup with Utah license plates.
