And the West is History

100 years ago: “The news mechanical department of The Evening Herald was put out of commission when a fire in the roof of the composing room did considerable damage to the ceiling, and some damage was done by smoke, water and lime to the machinery and stock. The fire is believed to have originated from an overheated gas flue, that leads from the metal pot of the linotype through the ceiling.”

75 years ago: “At the home of County Sheriff Bruce Sullivan nearly a hundred La Plata County Republicans met, enjoyed a potluck dinner, a splendid musical program, and gave sincere consideration, not only to the memory of the great Abraham Lincoln, but to a study of what Abraham Lincoln would counsel, where he has given us again, for the benefit to us of a guiding thought.”

50 years ago: “Saturday was even colder than Friday except at Electra Lake north of Durango where the thermometer registered exactly the same both mornings, 25½ degrees below zero. Durango’s official low Saturday was minus 11. It warmed up during the day to 28 degrees above zero, but still several degrees below freezing.”

25 years ago: “An environmental company has applied for a permit to discharge treated water produced from a coal-gas well into a tributary of the Animas River near Bondad. The permit would restrict the amount of pollutants allowed to be discharged into the tributary, a normally dry creek bed several miles west of the river, and would dictate self-monitoring standards for the company operating the facility. ... If the pilot is successful, production companies would have another choice for disposing of the large amounts of water initially produced from Fruitland wells.”
