FLC’s Herrera swats his way to another league accolade

Center earns top defensive honors

Defensive honors are starting to be come commonplace for Alex Herrera.

The Fort Lewis College center was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his work in FLC’s 97-93 overtime victory Saturday at Adams State.

It’s the second such award for Herrera this season. He was named the league’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year prior to the season after taking home the top defensive accolade after last season, and he was named the league’s top defensive player on a weekly basis twice as a sophomore last season.

On Saturday, the Ignacio High School alumnus recorded the third eight-block game of his career. Herrera also pulled in seven rebounds, six of which came on the defensive end, to go with 20 points.

Herrera is leading the conference in blocks with 28 (an average of four per game), rebounds per game with an average of 10 and field goal percentage at 63.8 percent.

New Mexico Highlands senior guard Mannie Cass earned top offensive honors this week, scoring 60 points in two games, including a 41-popint effort in a double-overtime win over Western State on Friday.

The Skyhawks sit at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in RMAC play. They’ll finish up 2013 with a game Friday at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction before heading to Gunnison on Saturday to face Western State.
