Fly-fishing class to be offered
Pine River Community Learning Center will have Glenn Tinnen teach an introduction to fly-fishing techniques and fly tying from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 25 at the center’s Bayfield location, 54 E. Mill St.
Tinnen will meet participants at 2 p.m. April 27 in Eagle Park in Bayfield to teach how to cast and fish. The cost is $50.

Scholarship available to Colorado woman
Colorado Master Farm Homemaker Guild is offering a $500 scholarship to a Colorado woman with an agricultural background.
Known by the guild as the Second Chance Scholarship, it will be given to someone who has had her college education interrupted or postponed and is hoping to attend a college, trade school or a secondary education institution. Homemakers are encouraged to apply.
Requirements are three references, a biographical statement of work history, community involvement, future goals and a statement about why the applicant is deserving of the scholarship. The application deadline is May 15.
The award must be used in the year it is received. The guild reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

Liberty School to host Visitors Day, film festival
The Liberty School, 215 E. 12th St., will host a Visitors Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25.
All are welcome. The school is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) children.
The school’s Student Film Festival will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church, 1448 Florida Road. All are welcome.

BHS band to host uniform fundraiser
The Bayfield Association for the Advancement of Music and the Bayfield High School Marching Band will host a fundraiser to purchase new uniforms.
The new jackets will feature a Wolverine claw mark on a purple and black jacket, with black and gold gauntlets. The band is currently using uniforms that were purchased second-hand, are dated and wearing out.

Fort Lewis College to host symposium
The Fort Lewis College School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences’ Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Thursday at FLC.
A keynote address by FLC assistant professor of biology and 2012-13 FLC featured scholar Erin Lehmer will be held at 12:20 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
At 1:30 p.m., students will give oral presentations of their work in the Student Union’s Vallecito Room. Poster presentations will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the ballroom. During the poster presentations attendees will have the opportunity to explore students’ work and ask questions.

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:
“History & Geology of Uranium Mining in Western Colorado” with Jeff Bramwill will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. May 1. The cost is $49. Participants will learn about uranium and other radioactive elements that have been mined in western Colorado for more than 100 years.
“Songwriting & Performance, Part I – Write,” workshop with Caitlyn Cannon Eddins will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from April 23 to May 28. The cost is $114 for six classes.

Colorado Lifework announces classes
The Colorado Lifework, a nonprofit, will host these classes:
A dream study group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning April 24. This group is for people who have completed “Choice of Transcendence” or who have had significant psychotherapy. District 9-R to host budget meeting
Durango School District’s Superintendent Dan Snowberger invites the community to attend the public budget meeting at 6 p.m. April 24 in the board room at the Central Office, 201 E. 12th St.
Snowberger will share the proposed 2013-14 school budget and explain large expenditure items and budget plans for the new school year.
Character Education Partnership to meet
Durango Character Education Partnership will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the board room at the Central Office, 201 E. 12th St.
Participants include the Durango School District 9-R, charter schools, the Montessori school, Mercy Regional Medical Center, city of Durango, San Juan Basin Health Department, La Plata Economic Development Alliance, Durango Chamber of Commerce and others. The community is invited.
Educational team seeking members
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at Miller Middle School and Atlas at Durango High School are seeking parents and community members who are interested in participating on the IB MYP Educational Team.
This team will work with the IB coordinator to help develop clear, written plans that provide the school’s goals, strategies, accountability and time lines.

Sunnyside to host award ceremony
Sunnyside Elementary School will host its chili cook-off, award ceremony and community forum from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. April 25.
This will be a celebration of Sunnyside’s John Irwin Award, which is given to schools that exceed expectations on the three-year school performance framework’s indicator related to academic achievement and that meet or exceed expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps.
Durango School District 9-R’s superintendent and board members will present Sunnyside with the award.
After the ceremony there will be a chili cook-off. People who are planning to bring chili should notify the Sunnyside office staff.
The final day to enter is Tuesday. Prizes will be given.
Chili must be fully prepared and brought to the Sunnyside gym by 4:45 p.m. After the cook-off, participants will have an opportunity to participate in a discussion with the superintendent about 21st Century Learning.

9-R Advisory committee hosting survey
The Durango School District 9-R District Accountability and Advisory Committee is hosting a survey through April 26.
The survey will gather information from parents to help identify strengths, as well as areas in which improvements can be made.

During parent/teacher conferences in April, the computer labs will be available for parents to complete the survey. Schools will analyze and review data and share results with their School Accountability Council. The results also will be posted on the website.
Health centers hosting brick campaign
The School-Based Health Centers are hosting a brick campaign through May 31.
The campaign will allow community members to purchase one of two bricks, priced at $50 and $100. All profits from the campaign will cover operation costs, such as salaries for health-care providers and supplies.
The centers are aiming to raise $5,000 to cover operational costs for the upcoming school year. All bricks purchased will be engraved with whatever message the patron chooses and will be permanently displayed at the front entry of the health center at Durango High School.

Poetry Slam scheduled for April 24
The Annual Poetry Slam be held from 6 to 8 p.m. April 24 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
The Poetry Slam encourages literacy and performance among the community’s young people. Prizes will be awarded to the top three performers, as judged by a panel of community members.
The event is open to the public, but only current high school students may enter the competition.
Student poets will need to sign-in between 5:30 and 6 p.m. to be included.
Guitar workshop to be held Saturday
The “Learn to Play Guitar in a Day!” workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Fort Lewis College.
The cost is $84. Participants will learn basic chords, simple strumming and picking patterns; play familiar songs; learn music theory, tablature, tuning and guitar care; and more. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar.

Escalante to host open house April 24
Escalante Middle School will host an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. April 24.
The open house will provide the opportunity for incoming sixth-grade students and families to learn about Escalante (Durango’s Expeditionary Learning Middle School); meet principals, counselors, and teachers; and learn about the characteristics of the school.
Miller to host introduction night
Miller Middle School will host its Introduction Night from 6 to 7 p.m. April 25 to receive the class of 2020.
The meeting will be held in the auditorium.
