Pop culture website launches

Though we make fun of our parents and grandparents for talking about the “good old days,” I admit I’ll always have a fondness for the music, movies and other pop culture I grew up with in the ‘80s.

Many of us like to reminisce via Facebook, Twitter and other channels, but I haven’t seen a social media site dedicated solely to nostalgia. Today, a new site, Do You Remember (www.doyouremember.com), aims to be the first by asking users to share their favorite things from the past.

Head there now, and you can “create a memory” of Marty McFly’s Nikes (pictured), the movie “The Monster Squad” or whatever you love and miss.

While this sounds pretty Pinterest-esque, DYR aims to stand out with its “semantic search” feature. As users type, pop-culture references are simultaneously searched. (So, for example, if I happen to be talking about “Arrested Development” in a chat room, photos, YouTube videos and more “Arrested” assets automatically pop up on the right side of the screen.)

“Sometimes you need a trigger of something that brings back a memory,” founder Michael Gitter told me on the phone. He added that the site casts a wide net and is aimed at “anybody who likes to think about things from their childhoods.”

DYR posts original content as well: Today you’ll see a nostalgic piece about Joey Ramone by the former wife of Richie Ramone . The daily “It Happened Today” roundup lists notable pop-culture birthdays and events.

The site officially launched this morning. Do You Remember also posts nostalgic tweets at @DoYouRemember;https://twitter.com/DoYouRemember.
