Just days after ending their 11-game losing streak, the Skyhawks reaped another award.
Running back Dewaun Wesley was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after the Fort Lewis College football team downed Oklahoma Baptist 23-14 on Saturday.
Wesley helped key a successful ground-based attack for the Skyhawks (1-1). The junior from Los Angeles ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, or an average of 7.3 yards per carry.
Wesley’s longest carry of the day went for 63 yards, and his final touchdown run put Fort Lewis in front to stay at 17-14 with 9 minutes, 58 seconds left.
The victory over the Bison was the first for the Skyhawks since a season-ending win in 2011 over this week’s opponent, New Mexico Highlands. It also ended a nine-game losing streak at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
Vince Coach of Adams State picked up the week’s top defensive honor after compiling nine tackles and a fumble recovery, which he returned 80 yards for a touchdown in a win over Oklahoma Panhandle.
Return man Josh Sandoval of CSU-Pueblo was named Special Teams Player of the Week after recording his third career punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter of Saturday’s win over Angelo State at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
