100 years ago: “With the shipment to the Aztec and Farmington fruit sections of several carloads of peach baskets, the shortage of packing material that delayed shipments last week is somewhat relieved.”

75 years ago: “An Electra Lake resident, name un-revealed, apprehended a mother bear and her cubs stealing apples. She had ripped off a screen and was reaching through the opening gathering up apples and handing them to the cubs.”

50 years ago: SILVERTON – “Two miners, working in the Black Hawk mine above Gladstone were overcome by gas or bad air, and one of them fell from the mine car and died. The two were riding the electric-powered train out of the tunnel and ran into a gas pocket. Both become unconscious quickly, and one fell from the moving car. The car, with one remaining unconscious man, went about 200 yards in the tunnel, past the pocket of bad air. More than an hour later, he regained consciousness.”

25 years ago: “The Bayfield School Board approved Butch Prior as the Bayfield High School athletic director. To fill the position, Prior was forced to resign as head coach of the Bayfield football and basketball teams. Prior had been the Wolverines’ head coach for 15 years.”
