And the West is History

100 years ago: “Sam Ethridge, the sheep inspector, came down from Mancos on a business trip. He expects to be through with the inspection in that part of the state shortly.”

75 years ago: “Kangaroo Court – a feature which proved more than popular last year – will be opened in Durango. This pre-Fiesta fun-making event proved such a success last year that it is being repeated by popular demand.”

50 years ago: “With Fiesta visitors swelling the normal number of visitors, the chamber of commerce asked motel and hotel operators to call the chamber office as soon as they fill up so that attempts can be made to place visitors in other housing.”

25 years ago: “The Animas-La Plata Water Conservancy District board has set a hearing where it expects to approve 247 petitions for irrigation water from the Animas-La Plata Project. When the board accepts the petitions, they become contracts by individual farmers to buy water from the project when it is built, at least 10 years from now.”
