When the mountain originally opened, it consisted of a tow rope, a new bridge over the Animas River and a mile of terrain cleared by the community. Now, it has a double chairlift that adds an extra 100 feet of elevation.
Kendall Mountain Ski Area in Silverton, elevation 9,318 feet, opens for its 50th season Friday. The town-operated area prides itself as a family-friendly mountain with lots of beginner and intermediate terrain, and a total of 350 acres of skiable area. The official 50th season celebration will be held Feb. 7 before the annual skijoring event.
Sure, it’s no Aspen, but check this out: Adults can ski for $20, kids 6-17 for $15 and seniors 65-plus for $10. Kids 5 and younger are free.
Meanwhile, the more hard-core skiers and snowboarders in the Silverton area will have to wait until Dec. 21. That’s when Silverton Mountain opens for unguided skiing during the weekends. It’s scheduled to open Jan. 10 for guided tours.
