FLC center to host ‘Embrace the Earth’

The

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the film will begin at 6:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 (includes movie and food) or $15 at the door. Tickets are available at Maria’s Bookshop and the FLC Environmental Center. Raffle tickets are $5 and will be available at the Environmental Center as well as at the door on the night of the event. All proceeds will benefit the Environmental Center.

A pass will be raffled off to the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival in May. After the film, there will be presentations by three local climate experts. The focus of the presentations will be constructive actions people can take to change the world.

Open house slated for wastewater plant

The city of Durango will host a community open house about the Santa Rita Wastewater Treatment Plant from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Community members are encouraged to attend to learn more about the project and participate in the process to help shape the vision for the treatment plant. Public comments will be used to guide the project team as it develops the architectural “look and feel” of the facility and the landscape elements.

The design period is expected to extend through the end of the year. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2017.

Whitewater boating to be focus of lecture

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “One Hundred Years of Whitewater Adventure” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall Room 130 at Fort Lewis College.

The history of whitewater boating has as many twists and turns as the canyons its pioneers explored.

The lecture will be presented by Kent Ford, author of whitewater books and videos and an International Whitewater Hall of Fame inductee.

Grange to honor citizen, granger

The Marvel Grange will honor a Community Citizen and an Outstanding Granger with a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Marvel Grange, 217 County Road 133A.

Meat and beverages will be provided. The grange will also share the video “Rural Free Delivery.” Junior Grangers invite kids to come and receive a jump rope. For every jump rope given out, the Junior Grangers will donate $1 to the American Heart Association.

Trails 2000 invites you to kickoff party

Trails 2000 will host the 2016 Trailwork Kickoff Party from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Overend Mountain Park.

Participants should meet at the Hidden Valley Trailhead. The event, sponsored by Alpine Bank, kicks off the 2016 trail season.

No experience is necessary.

Trails 2000 will provide tools, gloves, a safety/instructional tool talk, water and snacks. Volunteers should wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, sun hat and sunscreen and bring a water bottle and rain jacket.

Trails 2000 will host public trailwork each Wednesday, as well as other announced days and times, throughout the trail season.
