Durango Arts Center to host GOAL program

Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will host GOAL from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26, Nov. 2 and Nov. 16 in the education studio.

GOAL is offered to girls in fifth to eighth grade. Students are nominated by a teacher or adult who recognizes their demonstrated enjoyment of the arts. Nominations are made by writing a short statement about why people believe the girl would benefit from the program and what her art interests are.

The fall session is called “Dreaming & Destinations.” Students will use drawing, collage, writing and paper construction to complete two books in class: an accordion book and a tunnel book.

The cost for this 12-hour session is $150. Partial scholarships are available.

Education center to host GED testing

Durango Education Center will offer computer-based GED testing for the 2013-14 school year starting Oct. 24.

The hours have been expanded to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Students must register in advance and pay for tests at www.pearsonvue.com. Space is limited.

GED tests are offered on paper and will be offered from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Oct. 29, Nov. 5, Nov. 19, Dec. 10 and Dec. 17. Paper GED tests will be offered only through December 2013. Starting January 2014, all GED tests only will be offered online.

Host families sought for exchange students

World Heritage Student Exchange Program is seeking local host families for high school students from more than 30 countries.

Couples, single parents and families with and without children in the home are encouraged to host. People can host a student for a semester or for the school year.

Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Comedy, music event to benefit Grace

“Pickin’ & Grinnin’: An Evening of Comedy and Music to Support Grace Preparatory Academy” will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Irish Embassy, 900 Main Ave.

The 6 Dollar String Band will play and Durango Dot Comedy will perform. An outdoor gear adventure package will be raffled. The cost is $10 for tickets to the show and raffle tickets are $5 or 5 for $20.

Also, academy students recently spent a weekend on a field trip to Moab, Utah. Students spent three days together hiking, exploring and learning about geography, geology, science, history and photography.

Mountain Middle to host exhibit Thursday

Mountain Middle School’s sixth-grade math/science class will exhibit “Bridging the Gap,” a project focused on bridge design.

Topics covered within the project include forces, tension and compression. Students used properties of triangles, ratios and the Pythagorean theorem to design and create a bridge. Students will display and load test their projects from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Lewis College Ballroom in the Student Union.

Speakers and panelists needed for career fair

Speakers and panelists are sought for the San Juan BOCES career fair Jan. 9 at Fort Lewis College with the intent of bringing together successful professionals with students to discuss how, why and when they chose their careers.

“PoWeR Expo: Strengthening Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s Future” the La Plata/Archuleta County Career Fair Collaborative is an event for high school students in Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio and Silverton. Students will have the opportunity to experience Fort Lewis College and attend three panel sessions based on the Colorado Career Cluster Model. “Postsecondary Workforce Readiness” also will be discussed and will be about having a plan for succeeding in life after high school.

Learning center to observe Moon Night

The Pine River Community Learning Center will host International Observe the Moon Night at 6 p.m. Saturday at its campus, 535 Candelaria Drive in Ignacio.

Danny Jaques will give a presentation about Space Camp and Space Camp Turkey. Moon related activities are scheduled along with telescopes set up to observe the moon’s surface. Refreshments will be served.

Columbine Christian congratulates graduates

Columbine Christian School congratulates graduates Riley Rifkin (2011) and Lyle Bryson (2012) for their election to Student Advisory Council at Animas High School.

Columbine Christian is a private Christian school that specializes in outdoor education and individualized learning.

Continuing education available at FLC

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these programs:

“Social Dance Basics” will be taught by Leslie Carlson on Monday evenings from Monday to Nov. 18. Two-step, waltz and swing basics will be covered, along with dance etiquette. The cost is $65 per person or $115 per couple for six classes.

“Architectural Design and Construction” will be offered by Mark Sullivan on Wednesday evenings from Oct. 16 to Nov. 20. This course will provide a hands-on understanding of the basic tools and techniques necessary to transform concepts into physical structures. Students will be encouraged to develop their own project and carry its design and planning as far as they desire. The cost is $104 for six classes.

“Introduction to Interior Design” with Nancy Ann Hibbs will take place Saturday afternoons, from Saturday to Nov. 9. Students will learn about design elements, principles, theory and application techniques. Included will be an introduction to drafting and presentation, color theory and coordination, and space planning and the arrangement of furnishings. The cost is $119 for five classes.

Life-Long lecture to address Ecuador

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Conservation in Ecuador: Goals, Challenges, and Implications for Global Ecology” by Sebastian Jurado at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.

Ecuador is smaller in size than the state of Colorado yet is considered one of the most biologically diverse nations on the Earth.

However, various national and international forces are challenging ongoing conservation efforts and pose real threats for the future.

Jurado, longtime environmental educator and Ecuadorian guide, will discuss the politics and policies affecting the current status and long-term prospects for this important, but fragile ecosystem.

Liberty School to host programs

The Liberty School announces these programs:

The school is accepting dyslexic, gifted or twice-exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) students for current year enrollment.

Title VII to host welcome-back feast

Title VII outreach educators, Teri Nuhn and Lucinda Long-Webb, invite Native American families to attend a welcome-back feast from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller Middle School.

Families with students of all ages are welcome. A back-to-school blessing will be performed by Diné/Navajo medicine man Paul Long Sr. There will be activities, cultural music and homemade food.

They also will have a presentation by a guest speaker from LEGO Robotics.

Elementary school families are asked to bring traditional stews, and middle school and high school families should bring tortillas, fry bread or other traditional bread.

Sunnyside to host Halloween Carnival

The annual Sunnyside Elementary School Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25.

Participants are asked to bring a book or baked good per family. Game tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each.

The carnival will include a haunted house, book walk, plinko, bingo, bouncy house, dancing and more. Fall foods and desserts will be on sale. People can enter to win one of seven family-sized gift baskets. All proceeds will go directly to Sunnyside’s reading and computing programs.

Big Picture to host haunted house

Big Picture High School will present its second annual haunted house and chili dinner from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 30 and 31 at 215 E. 12th St.

The cost is $3 for students, $5 in advance and $6 for tickets at the door. Proceeds will benefit Big Picture High School student projects. Kids 9 and older are welcome.

Escalante to offer 5K Fun Run/Walk

The third annual Escalante 5K Fun Run/Walk at Escalante Middle School will be held Oct. 19.

The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. Registration for the event will begin at 9:15 a.m. with the 5K Run/Walk along the Animas River Trail starting at 10 a.m.

Immediately after the event there will be food, music, awards and prize drawings.

The run/walk will be a timed event, and there will be awards for the top male and female finishers as well as top male and female finishers in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. People registered in the event will be entered in drawings.

Registration and parking at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane, will be marked.

All proceeds will go toward funding the new Escalante marquee sign.
