Law enforcement lacks respect in town

I have never once been treated with any respect from any law enforcement in Durango.

I’m not a criminal and obey the law, yet it appears since there is a lack of murders, bank robberies, carjackings, home invasions, etc., that dog at large is a crime here in La Plata County that our municipal court receives a lucrative revenue from.

My dog got into a little scrap with a neighbor’s aggressive male dog, and since my dog was the aggressor and pulled away from a relative of mine who had his leash, I was cited for vicious dog at large.

I had to appear in court numerous times over a one-year period, only to have the case dismissed.

I was treated like a common criminal and the police treated me worse. I was a military officer, and served our country for almost 20 years. I’m also a taxpayer and police salaries come from my tax dollars.

It would be awesome if our police department treated citizens with respect instead of a “guilty until I say you’re not” attitude. It’s a huge issue in Durango. So much so that I’m moving away from it.

There’s enough negative in the USA; the Durango Police Department has no reason to add to it.
