A Durango firefighter and paramedic is volunteering in Washington to help the state recover from wildfires.
Breaux Burns departed July 30 to take part in Operation Humble Trooper in Pateros, Washington, as part of Team Rubicon. Burns is a Marines Corps veteran who works for the Durango Fire Protection District.
Team Rubicon is a nonprofit organization formed in 2010 to give veterans a role in disaster relief. Burns has previously deployed to Longmont; Moore, Oklahoma; the Philippines; and elsewhere.
“I love being able to serve in Team Rubicon,” Burns said in a news release. “I almost feel obligated to go and help other communities because I am able to. I am thankful for support of the Durango fire department.”
In Washington, Team Rubicon is managing volunteers, performing damage assessment and clearing debris.
