And the West is History

100 years ago: “Four passengers on the Silverton southbound accommodation narrowly escaped death, when a baggage car and coach running behind 14 cars of concentrates, left the track, toppled over and hung on a narrow ledge over the Animas River.”

75 years ago: “We hear of a Durango woman who was determined not to spoil her husband’s sport, so she went with him, fishing. In following him around she fell into the ‘drink’ so many times that outside of fishing her out of the creek, he caught no other fish.”

50 years ago: “The Durango City Council renewed five cabaret licenses and one dance hall license and passed a resolution asking the federal government to put a weather station in Durango.”

25 years ago: “Prayers will continue to be announced to crowds before Durango High School football games despite a recent Supreme Court decision. The Supreme Court refused to review a Georgia ruling that bans organized prayers before sporting events. The court’s decision allows the previous ruling to stand and sets a nationwide precedent.”
