And the West is History

100 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. W.D. McMahon of Silverton were visitors in the city. They do not think very highly of the change that they made from the bee-yoo-tifull snow-clad streets of the mountain city to the mud-be-spattered Durango thoroughfares.”

75 years ago: “When Durango and Bayfield begin firing in the first session of the San Juan Basin league basketball tournament in Durango the curtain will be raised on what promises to be the reddest and the hottest basketball tourney played in the basin in recent or early years.”

50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Dryside News: “Fort Lewis Mesa School has new uniforms for basketball. They are white with orange.”

25 years ago: “Colorado skiers turned out in droves on the slopes over Presidents Day weekend to enjoy the fresh powder and help kick off what resort operators regard as the start of the spring skiing season. Officials at Purgatory trumpeted the figures. The resort logged approximately 16,000 skiers over the three-day weekend and set a skier-count record Monday.”
