Google to support Apple in iPhone case
SAN FRANCISCO – Google will back Apple in its court battle with the FBI over the security of its iPhone.
Last week, a court ordered Apple to help the FBI hack into a locked iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino killers in December’s shooting spree. Apple opposes the order.
Google now plans to file a “friend of the court” brief on Apple’s behalf within the next week, a person familiar with the situation said. The person asked not to be identified because Google is still drafting the document.
Google makes the Android software that powers most smartphones in the world. Like Apple, it fears creating a precedent that authorities could use to read messages, photos and other sensitive information stored on phones.
UN to vote on new North Korea sanctions
UNITED NATIONS – The United States on Thursday introduced a draft UN Security Council resolution that it said will significantly increase pressure on North Korea in response to its latest nuclear test and missile launch.
Ambassador Samantha Power said the draft is meant to ensure North Korea will be held accountable for its actions.
“It is a major upgrade and there will be, provided it goes forward, pressure on more points, tougher, more comprehensive, more sectors. It’s breaking new ground in a whole host of ways,” Power said before heading into a closed-door meeting where the U.S. planned to circulate the draft to all 15 council members.
The draft is the result of an agreement between the United States and China, North Korea’s main ally. The council is expected to vote on it over the weekend.
