County code strict on loose dogs

The Herald recently quoted the director of Animal Control as stating there are no leash laws in La Plata County (May 21). In fact, the La Plata County Code contains 14 sections of law concerning loose dogs.

It requires a leash less than 8 feet in length or the ability to call a dog to within 4 feet of your body. Voice control means your dog will leave anything – even a filet mignon – to return to you instantly on only one verbal command.

The penalty for loose dogs in the county is more severe than in the city. It includes fines, impoundment or death.

As a lifelong dog-lover, I don’t want to see any more dogs killed because their owners didn’t know the law.
