Free Scotland can keep pound, official says
LONDON – Scotland’s pro-independence leader says a separate Scotland would not be a foreign country to England and claims U.K. Treasury chief George Osborne made a “monumental error” when he said Scotland could not keep the pound as its currency after independence.
First Minister Alex Salmond told a London audience Scotland and the rest of the British Isles are inseparably bound.
Scots will vote in an independence referendum on Sept. 18. Salmond says a “yes” vote will mean a country with its own passports, taxes and fairer social policies. But he wants to keep Britain’s currency, its monarch and European Union membership.
Gunmen flee after attacking Libyan station
TRIPOLI, Libya – Gunmen launched an attack on Libya’s official television station on Tuesday, firing rocket-propelled grenades at the troops guarding it before they were driven off by reinforcements, officials said. There were no reports of casualties.
The officials said the attackers were likely the followers of militia leader Jumaa al-Shahm, who had controlled the Libya TV station building in the capital Tripoli for months before they were ousted by government forces last week and al-Sham arrested.
Libya’s military and police are in disarray, outmanned and outgunned by rival militias.
