Girls Lacrosse

Durango 12, Telluride 5

Girls LacrosseThe Durango High School girls lacrosse team got its first win of the season Wednesday night with a convincing 12-5 win over Telluride. The Demons (1-2, 1-1 Mountain League) got its offense rolling after they were shut out the night before in a 20-0 loss at Aspen.

Tied with two minutes remaining in the first half, Durango scored twice to take a 7-5 lead into the locker room.

“It was a huge morale-booster for us,” said DHS head coach Natalie Mitchell. “We started off really strong and had a lot of momentum by scoring those two goals. We just talked about taking care of the ball and continuing to do the little things well. We continued to be aggressive and it paid off for us.”

Durango played lock-down defense and with the help of goalie Virginia Herr, the Demons posted a second-half shutout over the Miners (0-3, 0-3 ML).

“Our defense was really aggressive and we caused some big turnovers, and then were able to have really solid transitions up the field,” Mitchell said. “It was a big performance from everyone and it was a great team win.”

Kiara Valley was the team’s leading scorer with five goals, while fellow captain Autumn Rymerson had four. Gwyneth Irwin returned from a concussion and was key in facilitating transitions in the midfield.

Durango will have two weeks off before taking the field again at 3 p.m. April 4 against Grand Junction at DHS.
