Sports roundup: FLC spikes Westminster

Local soccer, softball, football and cross-country teams all in action

The Fort Lewis College volleyball team got stronger and stronger as Saturday’s match against Westminster College carried on.

After the Griffins took the first set, 25-14, FLC rallied back and won the next three sets, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-13 to take the match, 3-1.

Natalia Lambos gave FLC a spark in game two with three early kills. Joviana Romero also had a kill and then Kamryn Lopez served an ace to put FLC up, 6-2. Westminster came back and tied the game at 8-8, but back-to-back kills from Alexis Hobie gave FLC an 11-8 lead.

Westminster tied the set again at 15-all. A kill from Rylee Johnson and then a block and two kills from Lambos helped FLC close out the set on top.

In the third set, Hobie got three early kills to help FLC take a 4-0 lead. Joviana Romero then added three kills for FLC and later served a pair of aces to help the Skyhawks take a 16-11 lead. Westminster stayed close, but Avynn La Rose made some big late plays for Fort Lewis, getting a kill and a block, to help the Skyhwaks take the set.

Lopez also made some nice digs, including a diving one-hander before assisting a kill in the same rally. Lopez had 20 digs in the match.

The Skyhawks led the fourth set from start to finish, getting early kills from Lambos and Hobie to build a quick 4-0 lead. Lambos and Hobie both finished with 13 kills in the contest.

Cameron Callahan also spiked a couple balls to the floor and Romero eventually killed the game-winner.

Fort Lewis improved to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC with the win while Westminster dropped to 3-13 on the year and 1-7 in the league.

DHS soccer shuts out Montrose

The Durango boys soccer team scored a 5-0 shutout victory over Montrose on Saturday.

Sam Carozza scored in the fifth minute to give DHS a quick lead. Six minutes later, Montrose goalie blocked a Durango shot, but the rebound bounced free and Davis Cameron made MHS pay by kicking it in the net.

Later in the half, Owen Carozza beat the goalkeeper to give DHS a 3-0 lead.

To start the second half, Cedar Newman dribbled by one defender, found an open spot and fired a shot in the net for another Demon goal.

Durango made some good runs, had some nice passing and kept the pressure on Montrose after that.

In the final 10 seconds, DHS fired one more shot on goal. The goalie blocked it, but it bounced free and when a defender tried to clear the ball, his kick ricocheted off the goalie and in the net for the final goal.

FLC football starts strong, but eventually loses

The Fort Lewis football team played at South Dakota Mines on Saturday.

Mines scored a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter.

In the second, however, FLC cut the lead in half when Brayden Miller and Dylan Holt connected on a 29-yard touchdown pass.

FLC went into halftime only trailing 14-7.

Mines, however, added two touchdowns in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to win the game, 42-7.

DHS softball loses finale

The Durango High School softball team played Palisade at Colorado Mesa University to close out its regular season on Saturday.

Palisade jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings. Durango responded by plating five in the third, but PHS scored 8 runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the fourth, DHS scored 4 more runs, but Palisade was able to add 3 in the bottom of the fifth to win the game, 19-9.

DHS finished its regular season 13-10 overall with the loss while Palisade improved to 14-9.

FLC men’s soccer loses overtime thriller to Mesa

Playing against nationally ranked Colorado Mesa for the second time in as many weeks, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team fell just shy of sweeping the season series. The No. 15 Mavericks rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory Friday in Grand Junction.

Tomas Duenes scored the game’s first goal in the 50th minute for the Skyhawks, firing a shot off the CMU goalie’s hands and in.

CMU tied the game in the 64th minute, but FLC had a chance to win it with 1:11 remaining with a penalty kick opportunity. Gabriel Legendre fired a dart that beat the goalie, but the ball glanced off the crossbar and shot straight down, denying the Skyhawks the go-ahead goal.

With momentum back on their side, the Mavericks were able to net the game-winner with 1:32 remaining in the first overtime.

FLC women fall to CCU

The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team was also in action on Friday. The Skyhawks, however, fell to Colorado Christian University by a 3-0 margin.

CCU had a dominant performance offensively, racking up 23 shots to just 11 for FLC. The first half was the difference with the Cougars outshooting the Skyhawks 13-1.

Cross-country teams races in Alabama

The Fort Lewis College men's cross-country team finished 10th in the field of 34 teams competing at the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers XC Invite in the early hours on Saturday morning.

The Skyhawks were led individually by John Ngaruiya with a 36th place time of 24:46.51.

The Skyhawks women's cross-country team posted an 11th place finish in a field of 33 teams.

Leading the flock for the Skyhawks in the 5k was senior Makiah Salzano who finished 41st out of 292 runners with a time of 18.18.51. Hot on her trail was junior Angel Curley in 46th place with a time of 18:26.5.
