The Durango High School football team scored with big offensive plays, returned a pair of interceptions for scores and took a kickoff the distance to blow out the Sierra Stallions 64-0 on Friday in Colorado Springs.
The Demons didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard either. On the team’s first offensive play, quarterback Tyler Harms completed a pass to Jordan Stanley who broke one tackle and later dove into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown.
Jeric Baruch scored next for DHS, rushing into the end zone from 7 yards out.
Then it was the Durango defense’s turn to score. Junior Garcia-Rodriguez intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. On Sierra’s next possession, Chase Robertson broke up a pass, and the ball landed in Baruch’s hands. Baruch then ran it into the end zone.
Durango then sacked Sierra’s quarterback in the end zone for a safety to take a 29-0 lead.
On the ensuing kick off, Tagert Bardin fielded the ball at about Durango’s 12-yard line and ran it back 88 yards for another score, giving DHS a 36-0 lead with 24 seconds left in the first quarter.
To start the second quarter, Durango’s offensive line drove Sierra’s defense way back and Zach Haber sprinted through an opening on his way to a 35-yard touchdown run to start the running clock at the 10:43 mark.
Baruch scored once more for DHS in the half on a 45-yard run to give DHS a 50-0 lead heading into halftime.
Haber broke free for another long touchdown run in the third quarter.
Grady Hill then rushed into the end zone in the fourth quarter for Durango’s final score.
Luke Wesley also intercepted a pair of passes for Durango, and Sierra’s final drive ended at midfield with a fumble that Durango recovered.
It was Durango’s fourth consecutive win and the team’s third-straight shutout. It was also Durango’s first win on the road this season. DHS is now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the 3A Southern League. Sierra slid to 1-7, 1-2, with its lone win coming against Durango’s next opponent: Mitchell.
DHS will host Mitchell (0-6, 0-2) at noon on Saturday.
