Higher teacher salaries in 9-R may help

How can we say Durango School District 9-R is doing a good job (editorial Nov. 17) when roughly 60% of parents think it is failing in its primary task – education.

Even though the poll was run under a previous superintendent’s leadership, it indicates the huge task in front of the new superintendent. The problem lies in the classroom not infrastructure (a la the last bond issue).

Although we have excellent and dedicated teachers, they do not have the support needed to provide a better education to their students. The solution to this problem is up to the superintendent to decide, but perhaps more teachers’ aides and a higher salary for teachers is part of the solution.

If this is so, it probably means a tax increase with the proceeds going to teachers and aides and not infrastructure. Is the new/old board up to it?
